09 October 2021
Swan & Maclaren has won the 3rd prize in the Char Yong Association Design Competition.
The design is inspired by the traditional architecture Tulou courtyard. The courtyard plays a very important role in Hakka history. It is the centre of gravity for the Hakka community. It host festivals; it connects people; it serves as communal space.
The team is giving the courtyard a modern interpretation. It is reinterpreted and broken into two: the private & the open. By carving out voids to create courtyards in the building mass, it provides the spaces of welcome and flexible usage.
The design competition was launched by Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) & Char Yong (Dabu) Foundation Limited (CYF).
